“I don’t suppose I could get some supplies from you, could I? I wasn’t able to sneak very much food for the trip.”

I said, “That depends. What do you have to trade?”

Pakki looked at me. “Um, well, not much, I guess.”

I looked at Lakki. “Do you suppose he knows enough about that planet to be helpful?”

“I have to think he knows more than we do. Whether he knows enough to make it worth resupplying his ship or not, well, we’ll have to see about that. Let me link the alarms to my comm, and we’ll go have a look at what that ship needs.”

She fiddled with her comm, and led the way to the cargo bay. Pakki took us aboard, and Lakki said, “You didn’t waste any time on making it homey, did you?”

“Ma’am, I figured I was lucky to scrounge enough parts to get her in the air. I didn’t want to push my luck.”

I said, “Understandable. Show us your main console, so we can bring up some diagnostics.”

“Huh?”

Lakki said, “This is going to be one of those adventures I hear so much about, isn’t it?”

I replied, “It’s beginning to look that way.”

Lakki sat down at the console, and brought up some system displays. She asked, “Why don’t you have a password on this? Anybody could have come aboard and flown it away.”

“I thought I had it hidden well enough that no one would find it, anyway.”

Lakki said, “You might have hidden the ship, but anyone could have traced your dark web activity, and figured out where you lived. Once they knew that, it wouldn’t take them that long to figure out where you had it hidden. You really don’t know much about security, do you?”

“Security? What do you mean?”

I said, “She means keeping people out of things you don’t want them to know about. She’s good at breaking into things that people want to keep her out of.”

Lakki said, “Here it is. Pakki, why didn’t you install the diagnostic suite?”

“The what?”

I saw the storm building in Lakki’s eyes, and I said, “C’mon, Pakki. Let’s go turn that valve around. Lakki doesn’t need our help.”

I winked at Lakki over his head, so he couldn’t see. She nodded. We turned and he got his tools. He said, “I don’t really need help. I don’t think you could do much anyway. It’s in a tight place. I don’t think you’ll fit.”

I handed him tools, and he changed the valve to the way it should have been. When we got back to his cockpit, Lakki said, “There’s more here that needs to be fixed than we will be able to take care of.”

I asked, “Do you have a plan?”

She replied, “I looked at the star chart. We’re actually fairly close to the shipyard from here.”

“Can you put that in hours?”

“Twelve hours travel time, one way.”

“You’re thinking fly out there, get his heap fixed up, and bring him back here?”

Lakki said, “That was what I was thinking. Do you have a better solution?”
